- This only works on early 14.4 Sportsters.
-
- ---cut-here------------------------------------------------------------
- To change your $290 USR Sporster 14.4 to a HST compatible to connect at
- 16.8:
-
- Init: ATS11=50V1L3X4&H1&R2&B1E1B0&M4&A3&K3
-
- enter this ONCE , unless you shut your power off or lose power then
- you'll have to re-enter it:
-
- ATGW03C6,22GW05CD,2F
-
- Here are the S register adjustments which you can write to NRAM:
-
- ATS14=1S24=150S26=1S32=8S34=0&W
-
- Do these things then call an HST board and you WILL connect at HST the
- screens may seem a little jerky but all file transfers will be done at
- HST speed and you can receive calls and connect with HSTs also.

- Sportster = crippled Courier HST Dual Standard? Perhaps.
- When I saw the first post on this, I thought it must be a hoax,
- but the rumors continued so I tried it. For what it is worth,
- it appears to work for my internal Sportster 14400/FAX modem
- which was purchased less than two weeks ago; I don't know if it
- will work on yours.
-
- FAIR WARNING: The magic GW commands apparently patch the modem's
- software; it may be possible to damage the modem this way. If you
- decide to try this, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.
-
- Below is a transcript of
- - what my Sportster reports from the inquiry ("ATIn")
- commands;
- - an attempt to connect to an HST modem - successful at
- 2400bps as expected;
- - the magic words, as I pulled them off the net, that are
- supposed to perform the metamorphosis;
- - a second attempt to connect with an HST - successful
- at 14400bps;
- - and finally, the changed output from the "ATIn" commands of
- my Sportster which now reports itself as an (ersatz?)
- "USRobotics Courier 16800 HST Dual Standard."
-
- Even the modem's online help screens change to reflect a
- variety of commands and features that aren't normally available
- to the Sportster, such as four phone number slots instead of
- one, and X0-X7 instead of just X0-X4.

- This is yet another rumour I found on a BBS :-) Do you believe it?
-
- type the following command on your USR Sportster
-
- ATGW03c6,22
- ATGW05cd,2f
-
- and now your Sportster is a 16.8 Dual standard, that's what it said

- Is there a truth to the rumour that certain versions of the USRobotics
- Sportster 14.4k V32.bis modems are capable of communication with Courier

-
- Yes, I can confirm this. Btw, you also need to set the S-registers needed
- for
- HST operation. These are: ATS14=1S24=150S26=1S32=8S34=0&W, and you only need
- to set them once, as they are stored in NVRAM. It works like a dream, with
- 16800-HST support. Type ATB1 to connect with HST instead of V.32bis when
- dialing a 16k8-Dual Standard modem.
-
- All Sportster modems sold to date that I have tested support this
- undocumented
- feature. Not only do you get HST, you also get ASL, Link Diagnostics and the
- other Courier features. Good luck with your cheap DS! :)
-
- Btw, this works great with V.small 57600bps Courier V.32bis modems too. Just
- use the same codes.

- I've got one of the large footprint USR DS modems. With all the talk that
- has been flying around about the sportsters and how to make them work like
- the DSs, I got curious, and tried the commands on my DS. The command:
-
- ATGW0000,00 produced an error but some tinkering soon showed that the ATG
- command did indeed do something albeit undocumented.
-
- ATG=XXXX:YYYY
-
- Will dump a block of 256 bytes from the USR modem's internal memory. The
- modem uses an 80188 processor, so the XXXX is a real-mode selector, and
- the YYYY is the offset. Additional tinkering showed that 0000:0000-7FFF
- was the 32K RAM in my DS, and F000:0000-FFFF was the ROM.
-
- I have tried this out on a friend's sportster and it produces the same
- results.
-
- Since then I have dumped then entire rom to a binary file and am in the
- process of disassembling the code. So far about 50% done the disassembly,
- I have to get a reference on what is different between the 80188 and the
- rest of the 80x86 processors since my unasembler program was a bit
- confused for a few of the opcodes.
-
- I'm interested in sharing my results with interested folks, but am still
- debating and curious as the the legal implecations of posting a
- disassembly of the USR firmware to a public forum such as this :-)

- Hi all,
-
- since last posting/asking about the sportster and hst 16.8 modem settings,
- my friend and I have made a few discoveries.
- Discovery #1:
-
- if you type atgw03c6,22gw05cb,2f &h1 &r2 &b1 - you and up with
- USR Courier v.32bis settings (type ati4 to see this)
-
- if you type atgw03c6,22gw05cd,2f &h1 &r2 &b1 - you end up with
- USR 16.8 HST settings ^Note: this is a D, this is the only difference
- from the first line.
-
- Then upon dialing into a 16.8 bbs, I was able to get a cps thru-put of
- 1875 chars. Probably couldve gotten a little higher, but transfer finished.
-
- The downfall of all this is, my friend who has the sportster 14.4 (with 4.1
- rom) and I cannout successfully connect at 16.8 (with above settings). It
- would seem that you need to have a real 16.8 HST on one end of the
- connection.
- Of course I could be wrong, so if anyone can duplicate/prove/disprove my
- findings, please post here for all to see.

- Disclaimer: I didn't do it! Nobody saw me do it! You can't prove
- anything!
- My opinions are my own. They do not reflect anyone/thing
- else!
