  74. When I saw the first post on this, I thought it must be a hoax,
  75. but the rumors continued so I tried it.  For what it is worth,
  76. it appears to work for my internal Sportster 14400/FAX modem
  77. which was purchased less than two weeks ago;  I don't know if it
  78. will work on yours.

  80.      FAIR WARNING: The magic GW commands apparently patch the modem's
  81. software; it may be possible to damage the modem this way. If you
  82. decide to try this, PROCEED AT YOUR OWN RISK.

  84.      Below is a transcript of
  85.           - what my  Sportster reports from the inquiry ("ATIn")
  86.             commands;
  87.           - an attempt to connect to an HST modem - successful at
  88.             2400bps as expected;
  89.           - the magic words, as I pulled them off the net, that are
  90.             supposed to perform the metamorphosis;
  91.           - a second attempt to connect with an HST - successful
  92.             at 14400bps;
  93.           - and finally, the changed output from the "ATIn" commands of
  94.             my Sportster which now reports itself as an (ersatz?)
  95.             "USRobotics Courier 16800 HST Dual Standard."

  97.      Even the modem's online help screens change to reflect a
  98. variety of commands and features that aren't normally available
  99. to the Sportster, such as four phone number slots instead of
  100. one, and X0-X7 instead of just X0-X4.

  408. Yes, I can confirm this. Btw, you also need to set the S-registers needed
  409. for
  410. HST operation. These are: ATS14=1S24=150S26=1S32=8S34=0&W, and you only need
  411. to set them once, as they are stored in NVRAM. It works like a dream, with
  412. 16800-HST support. Type ATB1 to connect with HST instead of V.32bis when
  413. dialing a 16k8-Dual Standard modem.

  415. All Sportster modems sold to date that I have tested support this
  416. undocumented
  417. feature. Not only do you get HST, you also get ASL, Link Diagnostics and the
  418. other Courier features. Good luck with your cheap DS! :)

  420. Btw, this works great with V.small 57600bps Courier V.32bis modems too. Just
  421. use the same codes.

  443. I've got one of the large footprint USR DS modems.  With all the talk that
  444. has been flying around about the sportsters and how to make them work like
  445. the DSs, I got curious, and tried the commands on my DS.  The command:

  447. ATGW0000,00 produced an error but some tinkering soon showed that the ATG
  448. command did indeed do something albeit undocumented.

  452. Will dump a block of 256 bytes from the USR modem's internal memory.  The
  453. modem uses an 80188 processor, so the XXXX is a real-mode selector, and
  454. the YYYY is the offset.  Additional tinkering showed that 0000:0000-7FFF
  455. was the 32K RAM in my DS, and F000:0000-FFFF was the ROM.

  457. I have tried this out on a friend's sportster and it produces the same
  458. results.

  460. Since then I have dumped then entire rom to a binary file and am in the
  461. process of disassembling the code.  So far about 50% done the disassembly,
  462. I have to get a reference on what is different between the 80188 and the
  463. rest of the 80x86 processors since my unasembler program was a bit
  464. confused for a few of the opcodes.

  467. debating and curious as the the legal implecations of posting a
  468. disassembly of the USR firmware to a public forum such as this :-)

  488. since last posting/asking about the sportster and hst 16.8 modem settings,
  489. my friend and I have made a few discoveries.
  490. Discovery #1:

  492. if you type atgw03c6,22gw05cb,2f &h1 &r2 &b1 - you and up with
  493. USR Courier v.32bis settings (type ati4 to see this)
  494.  
  495. if you type atgw03c6,22gw05cd,2f &h1 &r2 &b1 - you end up with
  496. USR 16.8 HST settings       ^Note: this is a D, this is the only difference
  497. from the first line.
  498.  
  499. Then upon dialing into a 16.8 bbs, I was able to get a cps thru-put of
  500. 1875 chars.  Probably couldve gotten a little higher, but transfer finished.
  501.  
  502. The downfall of all this is, my friend who has the sportster 14.4 (with 4.1
  503. rom) and I cannout successfully connect at 16.8 (with above settings).  It
  504. would seem that you need to have a real 16.8 HST on one end of the
  505. connection.
  506. Of course I could be wrong, so if anyone can duplicate/prove/disprove my
  507. findings, please post here for all to see.
